Reiki Basics

Posted by Ronda Snow  Published in Ronda Snow, Ph.D.

REIKI: (pronounced “ray-key”) is a health and healing system developed in Japan by Mikao Usui  during the early 20th century.

Reiki is often explained or translated as “universal life energy”. This “energy” that Reiki talks about has been called the “Vital Force” in western medicine. Every living thing has a connection with this “life force”…it is that special something that makes us ALIVE. Reiki works by improving our connection with this universal life force.

The energy is called “universal” because it is available everywhere, all the time. Reiki  is a bit like other energy fields in this way. Gravity is the same all over the surface of the earth, all at the same time. The gravity in New York is, for all practical purposes, the same as the gravity in LA, London or Timbuktu. Universal life energy is the same no matter where you are as well. That is why Reiki can still work even when the practitioner is far away – both the sender and receiver are still in the same energy field, no matter how far apart they are…just like people on opposite sides of the earth still experience gravity the same way.  Reiki works with the lightest touch, or with no touch at all. Working with light touch or an inch or so away is called “Level 1″. Working with Reiki over very long distances is called “Level 2″.

Reiki has something in common with all healing systems…even modern medicine.  All healing methods realize that “healing comes from within”. The living body itself is what heals. We can only help the process along, or at least lesson the impact of chronic, life-long problems.

In Reiki, we don’t add any of our energy to person receiving a session. We don’t manipulate their energy in any way. The Reiki master simply acts as a sort of extension cord, helping the client “plug in”  to a little extra universal life energy. A common analogy is the practitioner just acts as a sort of  ’soda straw’ that lets the client get a better drink of life energy.

Reiki differs from mainstream medicine in that it doesn’t “diagnose” disease. It trusts the inner wisdom and healing abilities of the natural body, mind and spirit. It simply balances the body’s energy, and brings the inner healing ability to optimum. Reiki believes the “energy” will go where it is most needed – not necessarily where we expect it to go. Reiki is a process of trusting life energy, not fighting disease symptoms.

Reiki healing is holistic. This means that is concerned with healthy mind, emotions and spirit, not just a healthy body alone. Reiki is also very gentle, with no known serious side effects. The effects go at a pace set by the body. It corrects problems and imbalances at a natural pace, which is often much slower than synthetic medicines. By allowing this natural pace, it is believed this holistic approach will get to the real root of a health problem.

Reiki is excellent for stress reduction. A session can bring almost immediate feelings of relaxation. It stands to reason that if stress can make some diseases worse, then the converse should also be true: reducing stress can improve those same “stress related” problems.
